CITY TOUR HALF DAY

Day 1: CITY TOUR

This half-day tour offers a unique mixture of architecture, archeology, history and culture.

We’ll start in the Plaza de Armas where we’ll see the Cathedral constructed where once stood the palace of Inca Wiracocha. Next we go to Qoricancha, the most important of the Incan “Temple of the Sun”, and at one time a resplendent palace. From there we go in private transport to the ruins near Sacsayhuaman, a place of great cultural importance to the Incas which later served as a fortress for the Spanish. You will be surprised by the enormous carved granite stones. Next we’re off to Qenqo, a labryinth-type ruin which some believe served in some kind of death rituals, and or possiby the site where Incas were embalmed. We continue to Puca Pukara, a military observation post with great stone walls, terraces and stairs. Our last stop is Tambomachay, the Incan baths made by constructing 4 stone walls directly in the side of a hill. After a busy but fascinating tour we return to Cusco.

After picking you up at your hotel our first stop is Chinchero where we visit an adorable ****(COLONIAL TEMPLE.****) We continue to the home of a local resident for a weaving demonstration and then see how natural dyes, drawn from local plants and insects, are used to color the fabrics.  After a brief cultural demonstration, we head toward the agricultural terraces of Moray seated high atop a plateau.  You will be surprised at how temperatures vary from the top to the bottom of the terraces.  The Incas used these variances to test how various plants and crops reacted at different temperatures.  Next we travel an unpaved road to the village of Maras to visit where the Incas once mined salt where salt is still harvested by hand.  We then have a brief but beautiful stroll to Urubamba where our driver will be waiting to take us to lunch. After lunch we continue to Ollantaytambo where we board the train to Machu Picchu. .
