A truly remarkable journey, we highly recommend you consider a visit to this jewel of the great Incan Empire, the ruins of “Choquequirao. This is extraordinary place surrounded by the imposing Andes rmountains at at an elevation of 3000m. Unlike the popular “Inca Trail”, this journey takes you to remote villages, through a lush tropical valley and by waterfalls whose waters flow toward the magical Apurimac River. Choquequirao, translated to “Cradle of Gold”, contains exquisite construction techniques and architectural beauty comparable only to Machu Picchu. We encourage you to take part in the adventure and experience one of the most fascinating sites in the land of the Incas.
Our first day begins very early with a 4-hour trip in private transport to the village of Cachora. Here we meet our guides and begin a 2-hour journey by horse or mule or on foot toward “Kapuliyoq”, where we first encounter the beautiful Apurimac River Valley and the surrounding snow-capped peaks. We then begin a 3-hour descent to our first campsite at Chiquiska(1800m).
We start with breakfast then begin our descent to 1500m through the magnificent Apurimac Canyon. Upon reaching the valley floor we cross the Apurimac River by means of a modernized hanging bridge and then begin the arduous 5-hour ascent to our destination, the truly amazing archeological complex at Choquequirao, arriving just in time to enjoy the astonishing sunset while making camp for our second night(3000m).
Today we visit those areas of the complex already restored and explore other areas more recently discovered and in the process of being excavated and restored by “COPESCO”, an organization dedicated to the preservation of Peruvian culture and enhancement of tourism opportunities in Peru. After a luncheon “Pachamanca”, a native Andean dish prepared in clay pots, there is an optional hike to “Casa Cascada”(House of the Waterfall)approximately 300 meters below Choquequirao. From here you can again see the stunning Apurimac Canyon and several surrounding “Apus” or peaks.
After breakfast we begin our return trip, descending to the Apurimac River where we stop for lunch. We then have a 3-hour climb to our final campsite in Cocamanzana. Once again we will experience a spectacular sunset just before dinner.
Today we start early to avoid the intense sun and heat, leaving behind the valley with a climb of 2 hours to the summit of “Kapulyoq”. From we have an easier hike toward the village of Cachora where we arrive about noon, have a brief rest and say goodbye to our guides. From Cachora we travel by bus to “Saywite”, a reproduction of various Incan living environments including the wildlife and plants integral to their way of live. We then continue by bus to Cusco for a well-deserved rest.
We look forward to the opportunity of showing you the magic that is Peru.
